#KITADIGDAYA, FOR EMPOWERED INDONESIA

"If one does not know the history of his own nation---The land of his own water---easy become a foreigner among his own nation," wrote Pramoedya Ananta Toer in his novel Anak All Nations.

The presence of Intisari became part of the media history strand in Indonesia. Arguably, the magazine was born during the information restraint regime of the 1960s. Also, the historical monument associated with the birth of this magazine is Prambanan Temple. In a dramatic performance in the moonlight bias in the temple grounds, Jakob Oetama and Petrus Kanisius Ojong discussed a new medium amid the constraints of information by the state. Their mission is the same, access to information that enlightens citizens. Then, they agreed to publish human-style media—not mere musings or opinions.

It's no coincidence that the two have something in common: Jakob and Ojong have a teacher's background. Both also have an interest in history. Both are also qualified journalists. Jakob was a journalist and led Penabur magazine, while Ojong was a journalist at Keng Po and led Starweekly magazine. It can be said, INTISARI is also an incarnation and continuation of Chinese press history.

In the April 2021 issue, this tiny magazine featured inspiring female figures from different eras. We can refer to them as empowered women. They not only bypassed the times with their thoughts but also influenced the minds of contemporaries—even for the present context.

In the past, the word "empowered" was often associated with "sakti", "potent", or "invincible". However, with the development of the times, we can now pin it to a scholar. Without science and knowledge, we never make it to the world we are today.

A dash of the cover story about Soerastri Karma Trimurti. He is known as a journalist and a figure who began his career in the youth movement in the 1930s. The next inspirational figure was Roehana Koeddoes, who was ordained as Indonesia's first female journalist. Later, Inggit Garnasih is a woman who inspires and supports the idea of Bung Karno.

We try to look before the Kartini era when Nusantara women already had a strategic role in the social and political system. Majapahit kingdom in East Java was twice led by women, namely Bhre Kahuripan in the 14th century, and Prabhustri in the 15th century.

We do not deny that the archipelago is studded with empowered women. In Aceh, Keumalahayati became the first female admiral in the modern world. Its fleet was supported by more than 2,000 widows in the 16th century. In fact, the earth and fertility are often symbolized as the figures of goddesses or mothers.

In the April issue, the tiny magazine entered a new history. The essence will change in the face and subject matter of the review. As the spirit of our predecessors, we will be more solidified in the main discussions in biography, history, and tradition.

Biographies, figures who have thoughts or works to change Indonesia for the better. History, a popular historical story about past events or events, but always associated with the present situation. Tradition, exploration of art and culture that become part of the daily life of society, including conservation efforts.

It all relates to the transparency of man in passing every challenge of the times. However, something has not changed in our ever-intelligent and inspiring style of discussion. Chairil Anwar once exclaimed, "Something has changed, some have survived. Because times cannot be resisted. Surely trust must be fought."

Let's follow #KitaDigdaya jargon for an empowered Indonesia!
